While in Tibet John Clay steals a priceless ruby that a monk tells him contains a sinner's soul. While stealing it he also removes the monk's hand. With his dying breath the monk says that he will come for John when his (the monk's) hand turns to ashes. John escapes and sells the ruby and becomes rich. Now he has to try to keep the monk's hand from turning to ashes.
