Action Comics #865
A deeply unsettling image greets readers of Action Comics #865 — a rotund, bespectacled villain in red pajamas reclines serenely in bed, surrounded by an enormous pile of Superman figures, all rendered in eerie, doll-like detail by cover artist Kevin Maguire. "The Terrible Toyman" promises a story where the Man of Steel's most childlike foe may be far more dangerous than his whimsical appearance suggests. With Geoff Johns writing and Jesús Merino on art, this 2008 issue is the kind of quietly creepy package that makes DC's back catalog such rewarding territory to explore.

The Toyman, who escaped from Arkham Asylum, kidnaps Jimmy Olsen. Toyman denies murdering Cat Grant's son and reveals that Adam Grant was killed by an out-of-control Toyman robot. He takes a baseball bat and destroys that robot. Jimmy grabs a Superman doll and uses it to escape. He then grabs his signal watch from a nearby workbench and signals Superman. Batman arrives, and Toyman sets the robots on him. As Batman and Jimmy escape, Superman arrives and finishes the battle. Cat Grant finds out her son was killed by a robot and decides to return to Metropolis.
