“The Hobby Robbers!”

In "The Hobby Robbers!", a 1944 Action Comics classic, a desperate trio of ex-convicts uses music as a weapon, preying on the emotional weakness of passersby—especially when they hear a mournful tune. When young Jo stumbles upon their scheme, he’s tempted to donate his hard-earned money to a group of wailing singers, unaware he’s walking into a trap orchestrated by the cunning Fiddler. Written by Joe Samachson and illustrated by Mort Meskin with inks by Charles Paris, the issue features a striking cover by Wayne Boring and Stan Kaye.

Three hungry ex-convicts are instructed to sing sad, wailing songs by The Fiddler. It is his contention that a man's most vulnerable spot is his sentimentality. Emory Tidwell, spying Stuff all mussed up from a scrap with some kids, gives him fifty dollars to buy new clothes and food. Stuff tries to explain, but hears a mournful vocalizing, so he goes over to donate the fifty dollars to the singers, only to find The Fiddler and his gang about to put a plan into operation.
