Scott Snyder originally intended only a consulting role on Absolute Batman before writer James Tynion IV persuaded him to take the book on as writer; Snyder agreed on the condition that Nick Dragotta — known for the Image Comics series East of West — serve as series artist. Issue #4 was conceived as a deliberate pause within the opening 'The Zoo' arc, with Snyder describing it as his opportunity to deliver a thesis on who this Bruce Wayne is from the inside out; the plot is jointly credited to Snyder and Dragotta, while Gabriel Hernández Walta stepped in as guest artist specifically for the flashback-heavy structure of the chapter. Frank Martin's muted color palette for the issue was noted by critics as a conscious nod to the palette of Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One.
