About this Issue

Absolute Batman #20 marks the first full in-story appearance of the Absolute Robins — Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Duke Thomas — reimagined not as Batman's sidekicks but as a state-sanctioned hunter unit deployed against him, each piloting a giant mech suit under the banner of the 'Robin Initiative.' The issue also delivers a landmark confrontation between Bruce Wayne and Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow) inside Blackgate Prison, during which Crane reveals the full scope of the 'Batman Project' conspiracy and orchestrates Joe Chill's death before Bruce's eyes, permanently closing one of the series' foundational mysteries. Taken together, these two plot engines — the inversion of the Robin mythology and the unmasking of the decades-long conspiracy behind Thomas Wayne's murder — make #20 the pivotal chapter Scott Snyder had been building toward since issue #1. The issue arrives at a moment of peak cultural resonance for the series: just weeks after publication, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios announced a full animated adaptation of Absolute Batman, cementing the run's place in the broader Batman media canon.

History

Absolute Batman launched in October 2024 as the flagship title of DC's new Absolute Universe imprint, written by Scott Snyder with art by Nick Dragotta and colors by Frank Martin. Issue #20 represents the creative payoff of a narrative architecture Snyder laid in issue #1 — the crows visible in the Gotham Zoo sequence, the 'Batman Project' file, and the shadowy role of Jonathan Crane were all planted as long-game seeds. Ahead of the on-sale date of May 13, 2026, Snyder publicly acknowledged on social media that DC made the business decision to reveal the issue's cover early — spoiling the mech-suited Robin concept — so retailers could process pre-orders before the Final Order Cutoff, a choice Snyder described as necessary but creatively non-ideal.

Trivia · 7 facts

  • Published May 13, 2026 (cover date July 2026); written by Scott Snyder, art and main cover by Nick Dragotta, colors by Frank Martin.
  • First full appearance of the Absolute Robins as an active team: Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Duke Thomas, each piloting a large mech suit under the 'Robin Initiative' — a program funded by Jack Grimm V (Absolute Joker) and run by Slade Wilson (Absolute Deathstroke).
  • The Absolute Robins are adversaries to Batman rather than allies — deployed to hunt Bruce Wayne following Jim Gordon's death, which was publicly framed as a Batman murder.
  • Key revelation: Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow), revealed by his real name here per the DC Database, is shown to be a co-architect of the 'Batman Project' conspiracy alongside Jack Grimm; he was present at the Gotham Zoo the day Thomas Wayne was killed, commanding Joe Chill.
  • Joe Chill dies in this issue: at Crane's command, Chill hangs himself in his Blackgate cell as Batman watches, with Crane cutting Batman's attempt to save him — permanently removing a foundational figure from the Absolute Universe's Batman origin.
  • The issue directly recontextualizes Absolute Batman #1: Bleeding Cool and Snyder's own social media commentary confirm that crows visible in the zoo scene of issue #1 were Crane's, a detail planted 19 issues earlier.
  • In June 2026, roughly one month after this issue shipped, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios announced a full CG adult animated series adaptation of Absolute Batman at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, with Snyder as showrunner/executive producer and Dragotta as producer.
