The Christmas 1989 prog of 2000 AD delivers one of the more delightfully anarchic seasonal covers you'll find on a newsstand that December — Judge Dredd astride his Lawmaster, surrounded by a chaotic tangle of elves and cherubic figures clinging on for dear life, all rendered with real painterly warmth by Richard Dolan against a snow-dusted Mega-City backdrop. A "Merry Xmas" greeting floats above the mayhem, and festive balloon-headed figures drift through the scene, giving the whole thing a gleefully surreal holiday energy. Inside, John Wagner continues "Song of the Surfer" with art by MacNeil, making Prog 658 a fine snapshot of 2000 AD firing on all cylinders at the close of the decade.
