“Song of the Surfer, Part 2”

A snarling, muscular beast erupts from a tangle of grasping skeletal roots while bats wheel through a murky green sky — Simon Bisley's cover art for this December 1989 prog is genuinely unsettling in the best way. The tagline "Avanc Unleashed" promises something wild inside the Slaine strip, and Bisley's painted linework gives the creature a visceral, barely-contained fury. Prog 655 is a fine example of 2000 AD at its atmospheric late-'80s peak, featuring Judge Dredd and the full weekly roster of British comics' most adventurous anthology.
