“The Marauders, Part 8”

Ron Smith's cover for 2000 AD Prog 289 (November 1982) pulls no punches: Judge Dredd is flat on his back, grimacing as a massive, armored insectoid creature — all chitinous bulk and snapping mandibles — bears down on him in a struggle that looks anything but favorable for Mega-City One's finest. The bold "DROK!" sound effect and the dripping-letter "RABID" tagline set a gloriously grim tone that was pure weekly 2000 AD at its 1982 best. At 18p, this "Future Thrills to Shock Your Circuits" installment also carries Gerry Finley-Day and Colin Wilson's "The Marauders, Part 8" inside — a fine week to be a Squaxx dek Thargo.
