About this Issue

Prog 1874 marks the debut of Atalia Jaegir, the first Nort protagonist ever to headline a 2000 AD strip — a seismic creative shift for the Rogue Trooper universe, which had kept the Norts as anonymous, villainous cannon fodder since 1981. By centering an anti-heroine from the 'enemy' side, writer Gordon Rennie and artist Simon Coleby brought genuine moral complexity to one of British comics' oldest war-sci-fi franchises. The issue was also intentionally structured as a 'jump-on' prog, launching fresh story arcs across five strips simultaneously and signaling Rebellion's editorial strategy of periodic accessibility events to recruit new readership. It stands as one of the more consequential single anthology issues of the 2010s British comics era.

History

Rebellion and editor Matt Smith positioned Prog 1874 (cover-dated 26 March 2014) as a deliberate new-reader entry point, aligning the debuts of multiple story arcs in one issue. Gordon Rennie had been developing Jaegir out of his own prior Rogue Trooper work for 2000 AD — having written Nort-adjacent flashback strips from 2002 onward — and originally conceived the lead character as a man named Armand Jaegir before reconceiving the role as a female protagonist with a far richer personal history. Rennie confirmed he had artist Simon Coleby in mind from the very beginning of the pitch process, the two having discussed the look and feel of Nordland society before the strip was formally commissioned.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Kapitan-Inspector Atalia Jaegir (and the entire Jaegir strip), in 'Jaegir: Strigoi Part One' — written by Gordon Rennie, art by Simon Coleby, colours by Len O'Grady, letters by Simon Bowland.
  • Jaegir is the first 2000 AD strip to place a Nort (the traditional enemy faction from the Rogue Trooper universe) as its central protagonist.
  • Gordon Rennie originally pitched Jaegir as a male character named Armand Jaegir; he changed the lead to a female protagonist late in development, fundamentally reshaping the strip's identity.
  • The issue was published on 26 March 2014 as an official 'jump-on' prog — five strips each beginning a new story arc simultaneously, including Judge Dredd: 'Mega-City Confidential' (John Wagner / Colin MacNeil), Sláine: 'The Brutania Chronicles — Book One: A Simple Killing' (Pat Mills / Simon Davis), Sinister Dexter: 'The Generican Dream: Gun Shy' (Dan Abnett / Smudge), the new strip Outlier (T.C. Eglington / Karl Richardson), and Jaegir.
  • The Jaegir debut story arc 'Strigoi' ran from Prog 1874 through Prog 1879 (six parts).
  • Ray Dexter (Ramone 'Ray' Dexter of Sinister Dexter) and Finnigan Sinister appear in the opening chapter of 'The Generican Dream', set on the colony planet Generica during their witness-protection exile.
  • The opening 'Strigoi' arc was later collected in the trade paperback Jaegir: Beasts Within (Rebellion, 2015), alongside three subsequent arcs: 'Circe' (Progs 1893–1898), 'Brothers in Arms' (Prog 2015), and 'Tartarus' (Progs 1937–1944).
  • Simon Coleby had a prior history with the Rogue Trooper universe at 2000 AD, having worked on Rogue Trooper strips earlier in his career before returning for Jaegir.
