2000 AD #1569
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeProg 1569 is a meaningful convergence issue for two of 2000 AD's most story-dense ongoing threads. It marks the graduation of Judge Beeny — daughter of the iconic 'America' story's leads, America Jara and Bennett Beeny — from cadet to full street judge, closing a character arc that had been building across the Judge Dredd Megazine since 2006. Simultaneously, it opens 'Emphatically Evil: The Life and Crimes of PJ Maybe,' a multi-part spotlight on one of Mega-City One's most deviously entertaining serial killers, and does so in a single weekly package that also features Strontium Dog stalwarts Johnny Alpha and Wulf Sternhammer, making it an unusually loaded anthology prog for 2008.

Prog 1569 was published by Rebellion Developments in early 2008, during editor Matt Smith's long-running stewardship of the title. It arrived at precisely the moment Rebellion was expanding 2000 AD's digital footprint — starting in December 2007 the publisher had begun releasing new progs as downloadable PDFs, with a 2007 archive following shortly after — meaning prog 1569 sits right at the dawn of the weekly's digital distribution era. The issue continued the anthology format 2000 AD had maintained since IPC launched it in 1977, with multiple serialised strips running concurrently across each prog.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Prog 1569 is the opening instalment of 'Emphatically Evil: The Life and Crimes of PJ Maybe,' a Judge Dredd-related serial running from prog 1569 through prog 1575 that puts the manipulative Mega-City One serial killer P.J. Maybe at centre stage.
- Judge Beeny graduates from cadet to full street judge in this issue — a character milestone for the daughter of America Jara and Bennett Beeny, the leads of John Wagner's celebrated 'America' storyline.
- Beeny had first appeared as a cadet in the third 'America' story ('Cadet,' Judge Dredd Megazine #250–252, 2006) before her promotion storyline culminated here in prog 1569.
- Strontium Dog characters Johnny Alpha and his Viking partner Wulf Sternhammer appear in this issue; Alpha is the mutant bounty hunter whose death in the 1988–90 'Final Solution' arc remained one of 2000 AD's most controversial story decisions before subsequent revivals.
- Chief Judge Hershey and Judge Dredd (Joe Dredd) also appear, maintaining the Judge Dredd strip's ongoing continuity thread alongside the PJ Maybe serial.
- Gene the Hackman — the genetically engineered super-soldier protagonist of the 'Kingdom' strip — is also indexed in this issue, reflecting 2000 AD's anthology structure juggling multiple distinct genre strips per prog.
- Prog 1569 was published in early 2008, coinciding with Rebellion's rollout of digital PDF distribution for 2000 AD, making issues from this period among the first routinely available in downloadable format.
- The issue was published under editor Matt Smith, who had held the editorial chair since 2002 and oversaw 2000 AD's transition into the Rebellion era's mature, stable publishing programme.
