By September 2004, Rebellion was several years into its stewardship of 2000 AD, with Matt Smith serving as editor-in-chief. The 'Traitor to His Kind' Strontium Dog serial had been re-launched by original creators Wagner and Ezquerra following Johnny Alpha's celebrated revival in the 1999 Prog 2000 special, and this story arc represented one of their most politically ambitious returns to the character since the original run. The Robo-Hunter strip was itself a revival under Grant and Gibson — the original creators of the Sam Slade stories — relocated from New York to Brit-Cit and built around a new premise that made Samantha Slade a co-protagonist alongside the now-incapacitated Sam.
