What you’re looking at

This page from *Captain Billy's Whiz Bang* (a 1920s-era humor magazine) contains three distinct jokes and a poetic section: **The Main Joke**: A drunk Minneapolis man falls out of a taxicab, then pays the driver anyway—humorously demonstrating intoxicated courtesy. **Secondary Jokes**: A dialogue mocking claims of female virtue (suggesting it's easily disproven), and a romantic poem about summer nights and young love. **The Poetry**: A sentimental piece personifying "River Time" flowing through human experience. **The Final Line**: References characters "Maggie" and "Olaf" (likely recurring comic strip characters in the magazine), with "union being" appearing to be a pun or joke whose exact meaning is unclear without more context—possibly wordplay on labor unions or simply meaning "real human being." The page reflects early-20th-century humor: drinking culture, skepticism about female propriety, and romantic sentimentality mixed with crude jokes. No specific political figures are caricatured here.

14 Captain Billy's Whiz Bang One Good Roll Deserves Another A Minneapolis man went to a party. About 5:30 A. M. he made his way out of the house, balanced on the curbstone and hailed a taxicab. He climbed in at one door, and immediately rolled out at the other. Picking himself up, he brushed the dirt from his hat, took out a roll of bills and said: “Well, how much—hic—do I owe you?” * * * “But Flossie is such a virtuous girl.” “True,” said the Wise Old Man, “but how did you discover it?” * * * Yes! Yes! Summer night— World is right. Maiden fair— Boy is there. Go On Stars above, Whisper love. Moon, so pale, Here’s my tale. * * * Oh! a wonderful stream is the River Time, As it runs through the realm of tears, With a faultless rythm, a musical rhyme, And a broader sweep, and a surge sublime, As it bends with the ocean of years. * * * MAGGIE SAYS THERE ARE TIMES WHEN OLAF ACTS LIKE A REAL, UNION BEING.
