What you’re looking at

This page from the December 1921 satirical magazine contains several discrete humor pieces: **"A Serious Case"** presents a mock-serious doctor's letter about Mrs. Pat Rooney's numerous ailments (salpingitis, oophoritis, arthritis, cholecystitis, flat feet). The joke appears to be the absurd catalog of medical conditions and repeated surgeries—satirizing either hypochondriacs or doctors' tendency to prescribe endless operations. **"On the Missing List"** is a brief joke playing on Irish dialect humor, popular in 1920s America. A husband discovers his wife missing and asks the Irish washerwoman if she knows her whereabouts. The punchline relies on the washerwoman's malapropism: she hasn't seen the wife in the laundry this week, so she's "nary a soign" (sign) of her. The humor trades on period ethnic stereotyping. **"Whiz Bang's Monthly Motto"** offers cynical advice about card-playing cheating—reflecting the magazine's irreverent tone toward trustworthiness and gambling culture. The page demonstrates *Whiz Bang*'s blend of medical satire, ethnic humor, and cynical worldview typical of post-WWI American comedy magazines.

24 Captain Billy's Whiz Bang A Serious Case St. Paul, Minnesota, Dec. 17, 1921. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I hereby wish to state that Mrs. Pat Rooney has been a patient of mine for the past ten years; she was operated upon four years ago for double salpindigis and oophoritis; opera- tion performed salpingecomy and oophorectomy. She is at present troubled with rheumatic arthritis and also cholecy- stitis, also rheumatic flat feet. She is unable to do any work and in the near future should have a cholecystectomy. She has been afflicted with rheumatism and cholecystitis several times in the past year, and, in fact, is just getting over a chol- ecystitis, and also an arthritis. The only treatment possible is rest, diet and operation. Yours truly, DR. JOHN O'LEARY. * * * Let us now sing the beautiful little ditty, "We Feed Our Hogs On Raisin Mash to Get Our Pickled Pigs Feet." * * * On the Missing List Jones arrived home unexpectedly one morn- ing and found his wife's Irish washerwoman the only occupant of the house. “Do you know anything about my wife's whereabouts?” he asked the queen of the tub. “Faith, an' Oih don't, Misther Jones,” she replied. “There's nary a soign of them in the wash this week.” * * * Whiz Bang's Monthly Motto Trust everybody but cut the cards.
