Captain Billy's Whiz Bang #32 — page 19: what you’re looking at
What you’re looking at
This page is a gossip and humor column typical of 1920s satirical magazines. It contains three Hollywood divorce items—Billie Rhodes divorcing a publicity man for alcoholism, and Thelma Morgan Goetz divorcing an English army captain for infidelity. These are presented as scandalous celebrity news. The third item makes a joke about Paramount's new Wilshire studio requiring a simultaneous police station opening—implying Hollywood brought crime or disorder. The remaining content is miscellaneous quips: a sexist joke about women's kissing as "traps," a poem comparing men to sausages (you can't see what's inside), and a pun about a Scotsman and bagpipes ("fling" meaning both youthful abandon and the instrument's sound). The humor relies on 1920s stereotypes and sexual double-entendres typical of the era's "men's magazine" style satire.
