What you’re looking at

This page from the satirical magazine contains four brief humorous anecdotes typical of early-20th-century American comedy: 1. **"Slobbering Blues"**: A sentimental romantic scene undercut by mundane reality—the woman's tears aren't from emotion but hay fever, deflating the male character's romantic gestures. 2. **"Encore Ha Ha"**: A play on religious language. The minister's congratulatory phrase "the Lord has smiled on you" is twisted into dark humor—Jones suggests God is *laughing at* him (implying twins are a punishment or burden), not blessing him. 3. **"A Colorado Egg"**: An absurdist asylum joke where an inmate claims to literally *be* a poached egg and requests toast to sit on—the humor relies on the inmate's delusional reasoning. 4. **"Jockey" joke**: References wrestler Zybszko (likely Stanislaus Zbyszko, a famous strongman). The thrown jockey suggests replacing a human rider with the physically powerful Zbyszko—a non-sequitur punchline. The jokes employ wordplay, twisted expectations, and physical comedy typical of 1920s-era humor magazines.

48 Captain Billy’s Whiz Bang Slobbering Blues “Let me kiss those tears away!” he begged tenderly. She fell in his arms, and he was busy for the next few moments. And yet the tears flowed on. “Can nothing stop them?” he asked, breathlessly sad. “No,” she murmured; “it is hay fever, you know. But go on with the treatment.” * * * Encore Ha Ha Mr. Jones had recently become the father of twins. The minister stopped him in the street to congratulate him. “Well, Jones, I hear that the Lord has smiled on you,” he said. “Smiled on me!” repeated Jones. “He laughed out loud at me.” * * * A Colorado Egg While a Denver physician was inspecting the insane hospital at Pueblo an inmate approached him and asked: “I beg your pardon, sir, but have you a piece of toast?” “No,” replied the doctor, in surprise, “but I can get a piece if you want it badly.” “Oh, I wish you would. I’m a poached egg and I want to sit down.” * * * Jockey thrown in first race at New Orleans: “Let Zybszko ride him.”
