What you’re looking at

This page from *Captain Billy's Whiz Bang* (a 1920s satirical magazine) is a Hollywood gossip column mocking silent film stars' romantic entanglements and social behavior. The humor targets: 1. **Dana Todd's ambiguous love life** with actresses Gloria Swanson and Elinor—poking fun at unclear romantic intentions. 2. **Lois Wilson and Mildred Harris** competing for wealthy suitors, satirizing actresses' marriage-hunting. 3. **Mabel Normand's weight loss farm** and mysterious older gentleman—implying vain self-improvement and questionable companion choice. 4. **Bessie Love's constant maternal chaperon**—sarcastically asking if she "lost her hunting license," implying she's unable to date independently. 5. **Clara Kimball Young's awkward dance floor moment**—her new beau (Harry Garson) causes her to literally fall onto her ex-husband (Jimmy Young), creating social embarrassment despite her expensive jewelry display. The satire mocks Hollywood's superficiality, romantic instability, and status-obsession.

Just now, a dis- tinguished looking gentleman with gray hair is trotting Mabel about to the dance emporiums. * * * Bessie Love is often seen at the cafes, but almost always with “mama.” Lost your hunt- ing license, Bessie? * * * T HE other evening when Clara Kimball Young stepped out with Harry Garson wearing a whole photoplay worth of ermine and diamonds, a very embarrassing thing happened. They danced of course, but in one of those floor jams, Clara suddenly found her lovely head parked on the shoulder of her ex-spouse, Jimmy Young. Gallant to the end,
