The Wasp — 1918 — page 61: what you’re looking at
What you’re looking at
This page appears to be **narrative fiction rather than satirical cartoon content**. It's a passage of serialized prose depicting characters named Burnham, Henry Todd, and Mr. Winch on a beach setting. The text describes Burnham shaving himself with a knife, then waiting anxiously while observing the shoreline with "baffled, desperate glance"—suggesting he's awaiting something or someone important. A woman then approaches from along the beach. **Without additional context** (publication date, previous installments, or visible illustrations), it's unclear what social or political satire this narrative might contain. The setup—stranded men on a beach, urgent waiting, a mysterious female arrival—could be adventure fiction, or could contain satirical elements we cannot identify from this page alone. The passage reads as straightforward adventure/suspense narrative rather than overt political commentary. More context would be needed to explain any intended satirical meaning to a modern reader.

So set to shaving himself with Mr. Wineh’s big knife. The knife was a fine piece of cutlery, with an edge like a razor’s, and Burnham made a successful job of the operation. He had a deal of trouble in removing the butter, however, -and was forced to scrub his face a-dozen times — with sea-water and sand. By this time the sun was high and hot. The breeze from the open sea had scarce strength - enough to win across the sands to the shade at the edge of the grove of whitewood trees. Yellowish-grey crabs‘ scuttled about on all sides among the grey roots of the grove. Burn- ham sat with the open case-knife in his hand, deep in grim meditation. Henry Todd lay full | length on the sand and fell asleep. From where Burnham sat in the shade hes 3 had a clear view of the gently curving beach for several hundred yards to right and left. He raised his eyes every now and again and scanned the glaring sea in front and the beach on either hand with a baffled, desperate glance. : A figure appeared around the point on Burn- ham’s right and approached wearily and un- steadily. As it drew nearer he saw that it was ~ a woman. icomicbooks:com| is DANS Ses tte
