What you’re looking at
This page is from a serialized story rather than a political cartoon. It depicts a dramatic narrative scene featuring a character named Burnham carrying the governor's daughter through woods while fleeing danger. Henry Todd suddenly appears armed, apparently as an antagonist. The text references a "New England shipmaster" seeking revenge, suggesting a plot involving maritime conflict. Burnham is using the governor's daughter as leverage for his escape—recognizing she won't be harmed due to her status, making her valuable as a hostage or protection. The page contains no obvious political satire or social commentary visible in the image itself. *The Wasp* was known for satirical content, but this particular excerpt appears to be serialized adventure fiction rather than satire. Without additional context about the broader story arc or publication date, the specific historical references remain unclear.

80 THE WASP out a word he picked her up again and dashed ahead. She uttered no protest. The path twisted upward through the woods. The governor’s daughter was of no great weight ; but, what with the heat of the day and his recent exertions at the oars, Burnham soon began to show signs of acute fatigue. Still he struggled onward, holding the girl tight to his heaving breast. She gazed up into his strained and glowing face with anxious eyes. “Put me down,” she said, “you will kill your- self else! I.am not in danger. They would not dare to hurt me, whoever they are.” Burnham knew that she spoke the truth; but he had no intention of deserting that which he had every reason to believe would prove his only means. of escaping the revenge of the New England ship- master. So he continued to hold her tight and to. stagger onward. Henry Todd appeared suddenly in the path in front, musket in hand. His face was colorless and his eyes flamed. ; Comichooks.com
