The Wasp — 1913 — page 161: what you’re looking at
What you’re looking at
This page appears to be narrative fiction rather than a political cartoon. It's prose describing adventure/action scenes involving characters named Burnham, Henry Todd, Percy Stanton, and Willis. The text depicts two concurrent events: Burnham and Todd departing by boat with supplies, seemingly fleeing their "sheltered" island life to seek fortune ("pinch a living") on the seas; and Percy Stanton—apparently wounded in a duel mentioned earlier—being tended to by Willis after medical examination. Without seeing the full publication context or surrounding illustrations, the specific satirical target is unclear. However, *The Wasp* was a San Francisco-based satirical magazine known for political commentary. This serialized fiction may have used adventure narrative to critique contemporary society, though the exact point remains obscure from this page alone.

We must take the world by the wind- pipe again and pinch a living out of it whether it is willing or no.” The fight and the spilling of blood had put Burn- ham in a good humor and Kitty Trimmer out of his mind. He waded out to the boat, with Henry Todd at his heels. He found everything there, even as Todd had said—the box, the leather bag, a breaker of water, fruit, and a bag of bread. They hoisted themselves aboard, stepped the short mast, and pulled-up the little anchor. Then Todd un- slung the heavy cutlas from his waist and turned the boat’s nose to seaward with the oars. Percy Stanton was carried to his quarters by se- cluded paths and finally laid upon his bed. Here Willis examined the wound again, washed it, ap- plied a compress and fresh bandages. The captain and Throgmorton then left the room, and Willis sat alone with the wounded duelist until Dr. Hamm, Comichbooks.com
