About this issue

This issue of Joe Phenix presents the opening chapters of "The Dandy Conspiracy" by Albert W. Aiken. Detective Joe Phenix, operating a Wall Street private office, learns of millionaire Abraham Engleburt's sudden death. A newspaper account reports Engleburt found dead in bed with a morphine vial nearby—possibly suicide or murder. Engleburt's physician suspects foul play; police find the drug container but no clear motive. General George Washington Miggs, president of the Everlasting Life Insurance Company, arrives to retain Phenix, claiming Engleburt committed suicide deliberately to cheat the company of a fifty-thousand-dollar policy. Miggs insists Phenix prove suicide; the company refuses payment under its suicide clause. The house physician, Dr. Mucklestone, disputes the suicide theory, suggesting murder instead. Phenix, skeptical of newspaper speculation about Engleburt's finances, agrees to investigate.
