About this issue

This issue of Beadle & Adams' pulp magazine features "The Saucy Jane, Privateer: or, The Hunting of Old Ironsides," a serialized story of the War of 1812 by Captain Fred. Whittaker. The narrative opens in June 1822 on the Battery in New York, where crowds observe American warships—the President, United States, Hornet, Congress, and Wasp—departing for engagement against British forces. A mysterious tall sailor, Captain Frank Blair, recruits two men: the reluctant young naval veteran Harry Eaton and a grumbling old seaman named Tom Tucker. Blair captains the Saucy Jane, a fast privateering schooner, and convinces Eaton to join the crew with hints of personal knowledge and romantic incentive. The narrative follows their boat departing toward the schooner at the Narrows, establishing themes of naval combat, privateering ventures, and mysterious past entanglements among the characters.
