About this issue

The Border Bravo; or, Muriel, the Danite's Bride by Major Dangerfield Burr, published October 19, 1881. This serial opens with a massacre: gold miners returning from California through a canyon are ambushed by unseen riflemen, resulting in heavy casualties and theft of their treasure. The narrative shifts to New York, where banker Malcolm Merle's financial ruin is averted when a wealthy Californian deposits a quarter million dollars with him. However, Merle has illegally used the funds. When the Californian—Philip Barton—proposes to Merle's daughter Muriel and she refuses, he threatens withdrawal, forcing Muriel to pledge herself to Barton in marriage to save her father's honor. The story then returns westward to Paradise Valley, where Muriel, now part of a gold-seeking caravan, encounters a mysterious white-clad woman warrior on horseback who warns her away from the valley, cryptically prophesying danger ahead.
