About this issue

This issue of the pulp magazine contains the opening installment of "Shamus O'Brien, the Bould Boy of Glingal; or, Irish Hearts and Irish Homes" by Col. Delle Sara, serialized across two chapters. The narrative is set in 1880s Connemara, Ireland, and depicts the attempted eviction of Widow O'Brien by her landlord, Captain Desmond Burke, over a five-pound debt. The story establishes a romantic conflict: young Shamus O'Brien, an educated peasant and war veteran, loves Maggie Moore, a wealthy heiress, but faces opposition from her guardian, the lawyer O'Glory, who favors Burke's suit. Shamus, currently a fugitive with a price on his head following his involvement in Fenian activities, has secretly returned to Ireland. Burke exploits the widow's eviction to draw Shamus out. The narrative culminates in confrontation as a crowd of armed peasants gathers to resist the process-server Dooney MacDarrow's service of eviction notice, with the woman Nell Flaverty escalating tensions by striking MacDarrow with turf.
