About this issue

This issue of Beadle's Half-Dime Library (No. 80) features "Rosebud Rob; Nugget Ned the Knight of the Gulch" by Ed. L. Wheeler, a Western adventure serial. The story opens in "The Little Brown Jug," a Deadwood City saloon, where various miners and prospectors gather. Notable characters include the vain Colonel Bill Stokes, Judge Jacob Schriner, and the rough desperado Captain Hickory Hank. Baltimore Bess, a sharp-featured woman in men's clothing known throughout the West, observes the scene. A new arrival, the young and handsome Rosebud Rob, confronts Hickory Hank about his allegiance to Munro Malvern, owner of the disputed Big Bullion mine. Rob announces himself a man "to suit all circumstances" and declares his intention to challenge Malvern's claim. The narrative establishes a conflict over mining rights in the Black Hills, with Rob positioning himself as a rival to Malvern's interests.
