About this issue

This 1878 Beadle's Half-Dime Library serialization, "The Mystery of the Yellowstone Diamond" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, depicts an expedition into the Yellowstone valley led by English nobleman the Earl of Lochiel, French officer Jules Vernon, and Captain Leo Markham. Their guide Trapper Dan is assassinated by a mysterious white-clad archer. Meanwhile, a stranger named Burt Belford arrives in Bozeman pursuing the expedition; he hires Diamond Dirk—a handsome young frontiersman with a diamond-pinned hat—and several guides to track them. Captain Markham pursues the assassin into the forest, pursuing a tall, white-clad figure through snow. The narrative combines adventure, suspense, and frontier romance elements typical of the era's popular fiction.
