This is the first issue of Street & Smith's serial "Mezzoni the Brigand; or, The King of the Mountains" by Lieutenant Murray, part of their Sea and Shore Series. The narrative establishes the historical context of brigandage in the Naples region near Salerno and Amalfi, detailing how wealthy travelers, including Englishmen, have been seized for ransom. The story describes how King Victor Emmanuel's government has struggled against these mountain bandits despite efforts to restore order to Southern Italy. The central figure is Mezzoni, an exceptionally cunning brigand leader and master of disguise who has eluded capture through a sophisticated intelligence network and the peasantry's protection. Known as the "King of the Mountains," Mezzoni remains unidentifiable even to police. After a major ransom demand and diamond robbery, the government doubles the reward for his capture, dead or alive, posting proclamations throughout the region.
