She retired from the sick-room, but soon returned with a vial of colorless liquid, which she dropped in a wine-glass of water, and holding it to his lips bade him drink. He swallowed the potion and sank back quite overcome, even by so slight an exertion. She watched him forafew moments intently. He fell asleep then, murmured in his slumbers, talking un- consciously of his wife. His ‘‘tender and kind wife!’?’ A few moments later he opened his eyes, and said: ‘‘More air—I choke.”’ ‘IT will open the window.’’ “These drops burn me like fire; can ree be really cooling medicine?”’ ‘The doctor said so.”’ ‘‘Ah, well, he knows, of course,’ sighed the sick man, with parched lips. | ‘My dear,” he said, after a moment more, ‘‘g:ood- night.
