AUTHENTIC SCIENCE FICTION You'd think that none but madmen judge or write. Demands of style apart, what a happy field science fiction is for any writer! No love interest, that dead weight of popular fiction, is necessary ; stories may end in a bang or a whimper; settings can range from Southend to Sirius; _ characters may be men, mice or Martians and have as many hands or feet as required. Any subject is potential material, from toothache to tarantulas, provided the approach is fresh and original. And the approach may be not only scientific but documentary (vide Hal Clement), sociological (Poul Anderson), ironical (Alan Nelson), poetical (Sturgeon), whimsical (Ray Bradbury), amorous (Mclntosh) or plain SAVIOUR funny (Fredric Brown), etc. The sky is no longer the limit. The science fiction universe is finite but boundless—and it’s expanding! The best des- cription of science fiction I know is ““The Twentieth Cen- tury Morality.” Since pre- war, its range has extended from “‘the machine”’ to “‘man and the machine,” and the gain—in entertainment, pres- tige and sales-value—has been enormous.
