Here, Dr. N. J. Berridge has shown that the antibiotic nisin is of great commercial importance in the production of cheese. While cheese cannot be made without the help of certain bacteria, other bacteria are able to spoil the process, producing large quantities of gas and making the product unsaleable or even inedible. Nisin, added in small quantities to the cheese mix, is able to prevent the growth of these harmful bacteria while not affecting the useful ones, thus reducing wastage and, in- directly, maintaining a low price for high quality cheese. 121 FOR CANCER— News of antibiotics playing a new role also comes from the International Congress of Micro- biology, held in Rome a short while ago. Dr. Selman A. Wakesman told the assembled scientists and cancer specialists that he had treated 150 cancer patients with the antibiotic actinomycin C and that in most cases the patients gained weight.
