The terrible implications and carefully drawn background for this story read at times more like fact than fiction but this somewhat tense atmosphere is, however, relieved by several passages of quiet humour and the characters themselves are vividly portrayed. Altogether a moving and fascinating book. THE DEMOLISHED MAN, by Alfred Bester. Sidgwick & Jackson Ltd. 9/6. This is a murder mystery in a most unusual setting—New York of the twenty-fourth century! Richly imaginative in his style, the author provides here an absorbing tale to appeal to readers of both science fiction and the detective story. Ben Reich the ‘‘Demolished Man,’’ a ruthless master mind with a zest for power, seeks to destroy his rival for world supremacy: telepathy, inter- planetary travel and numerous other futuristic sciences are all part and parcel of an otherwise well-contrived detective story.
