A descent towards the sea coast ; a small town ahead of us, which for the moment looked a collection of roofs and nothing more; a nearer approach revealing a very picturesque and quaint little town, with streets and shops that seemed quite to eclipse the capital; a quiet air of prosperity ; gardens full of roses; a quaint church upon a hill, and a graveyard literally flower laden ; an hotel partly covered with ivy, well organised, and owned by the most charming and delightful landlady in the world, whose manners and appearance were too refined for the task of receiving and satisfying all sorts and conditions of travellers ; a harbour and pier before the windows, and the glorious sea stretching beyond.
