THE BLINDNESS OF JUSTICE. a corner of his desk while Henderson continued the outline of his scheme. But the Governor seemed unable to make the suggestions he usually made. He fingered his watch-chain and con- stantly looked at his watch. Hender- son asked him a question, and found he was not listening. “Darned if I don’t believe you're drunk!” Henderson exploded. “I come in here and try to talk business to you, and you don’t even know what I’m sayin’.” In spite of the Governor’s hasty apology and his attempts to mollify his chief, the latter clapped on his hat and strode out of the office. As he staggered back to his desk the Governor's eye fell on the envelope. He ripped it open and saw the mis- spelled word— CONFESION at the top. His eye raced to the bot- tom and read the signature— PrererR FRAVEL, beter noen as Pete the Pirate. He rushed to the telephone and shouted to long distance to get the State prison immediately. As he stood by the phone he read: Finney the fish and baldy newton croaked ferris. joe blossom never had 443 nothing to do with it. i wouldn’t of told this if it hadnt of been for his mother. she broke me all up. i am on my way to headquarters now to give myself up. He jumped to the telephone again, swore at the operator and demanded the prison immediately. There had been a little delay, the operator told him. The connection would be made in a moment. “Telegram for you, Governor,” said the messenger as he entered the door and handed over a yellow en- velope. His excellency opened it with fingers which shook so that he could scarcety make them do his bidding. Execution entire success. Blossom dead in minute after first shock ap- plied. Thought Blossom would con- fess, but he refused. The warden’s name was appended. The Governor dragged himself to the telephone. “Here's your party,” came the voice of the operator. ; “ Cancel the call,’”’ he replied. “ I’ve decided not to talk.” THE LANE IN AUTUMN By Lurana Sheldon HF, sunlit road has merged into a lane . Where velvet leaves invite my eager feet; But awkward branches now my vision greet, Yet their gaunt shadows toward each other strain, Glad to embrace, so long their love was vain. I hear no bird song, see no verdant blade, But on each side the ripened nuts are brown, And from the thistle hangs the tasseled down With satin luster richly overlaid. The vines lie heavily, a tangled chain, Along the wall, and now above my head The azure sky with paling sheen seems spread To hold the lane in subtle, mystic thrall, With autumn’s silence brooding over all. comichook (E©)
