She turned out the gas under the chopped beef, clamped the aluminium cover over the large frying pan to keep the meat warm, and left the kitchen. She was hungry, and the meat was drying up, and the lima beans were boiled down dry; the potatoes, too, were soppy from having been on too long—and all because of Albert’s de- lay. It was eight o'clock, and he should have been home at seven, or seven fif- teen at the latest.
