What you’re looking at
This page is primarily a **cigarette advertisement** for Spud menthol-cooled cigarettes (20¢ per pack), claiming 20,000 customer testimonials praising the product's smoothness and health benefits. The ad makes now-laughable medical claims: that Spud helps leukoplakia (inflamed throat), benefits actors and lecturers, and provides relief to cowboys dealing with dust. It promises "unlimited tobacco enjoyment." The page also contains unrelated **humor sections**: a brief military joke about a second lieutenant's vagueness, a short story about a wife wanting her husband to surprise his new doctor on his birthday, and a note about a judge dismissing overly verbose subway fare case documents. The juxtaposition reveals this as a typical 1920s Life magazine page—mixing advertising with satirical content—before cigarette health dangers were widely acknowledged.

Spuds increage RY enjovm ~20,C roy oy fe Je) Oo 1 WOULDN'T CHARGE Fi 1 One Cigarette Some 20,000 people have written us their experiences with Spud, the menthol- cooled cigarette. Tobacco connoisseurs spoke of Spud's blend as “epicurean among tobaccos”. Cigar smokers welcomed Spud as their “change-off” smoke. Pack and two-pack-a-day cigarette en- thusiasts labelled Spud as the cigarette “allowing unlimited tobacco enjoyment”, with the day’s last cigarette tasting “as good as the first”. Beginners cited Spud's gentleness on inexperienced throats. Dentists and throat specialists asserted Spud helped cases of leukaplakia (in- flamed throat). Actors and lecturers ac- claimed Spud as a great cigarette for income-earning throats. Cowboys, beset daily with alkali dust, described how Spuds brought relief to parched mouths. Chronic cold-catchers related how they were introduced to Spuds during a cold... how they kept up the acquaintance after the cold had gone. Numerous smokers told of the surprise of Spud’s first puff... how they had to smoke through a whole pack before they suddenly realized Spud enjoyment. But nearly every letter seemed to em- body one similar refrain: Now the smoking public is meeting the inevitable development in tobacco enjoyment... a tobacco enjoyment un- hampered and unlimited at all times, in all places...
