What you’re looking at

This page contains brief, gossipy social commentary from five cities—Portland, Saratoga Springs, Montreal, Boston, and Houston. The content reflects Life's satirical focus on high society and politics circa 1928. **Key references:** - **Portland section** jokes about 1928 presidential politics (Hoover vs. Smith), with a quip about voting for Will Rogers instead—mocking politicians' empty promises about the "bunkless platform." - **Montreal section** references Prohibition-era liquor smuggling across the US-Canada border, and alludes to hockey player Howie Morenz and athlete Sprague Cleghorn. - **Saratoga Springs** notes wealthy New Yorkers vacationing at the resort, including members of the Roosevelt and Pickford families. - **Louisville** mentions Mrs. A.T. Hert, a prominent Republican National Committee official. The satirical tone mocks the leisure activities and romantic entanglements of the wealthy elite while poking fun at contemporary political figures.
