What you’re looking at

This six-panel satirical comic traces the commercialization of Christmas trees. Panel 7 shows a shop selling "Up-to-Date Xmas Trees"—artificial potted trees displayed indoors. Subsequent panels follow a portly businessman purchasing one, bringing it home to his family, and attempting to decorate it with children. The final panel reveals the joke's dark punchline: the "tree" is revealed to be an actual small evergreen planted in a box, which has now been cut down—defeating the purpose of the supposedly "modern" alternative to traditional tree-cutting. The satire critiques how commercialism and artificial "progress" don't actually solve environmental or practical problems; they merely disguise the same destructive practices under the guise of convenience and novelty. The irony is that the "up-to-date" solution still kills trees.
