What you’re looking at

This page contains primarily **advertising and advice columns** rather than political satire. The main content includes: **"A Pipe-Smoker's Challenge"** — An Edgeworth tobacco advertisement disguised as reader correspondence. A smoker named Joe Rivers coins the term "tasty-smellfulness" to describe Edgeworth's appeal, challenging other smokers to articulate what they like about the brand. This is a marketing strategy using pseudo-authentic customer testimonials. **"The Confessions of a Dancing Man"** — A humorous personal essay mocking the era's popular "dancing marathons" (endurance dance competitions). The author expresses contempt for dancers who lose composure, can't converse while dancing, or persist in marathons. It's satirizing both the fad itself and pretentious dancers, reflecting 1920s social attitudes about proper decorum and gender behavior. The page also includes ads for NUVO pipes and Murine eye drops, typical period magazine filler content.

32 LIFE A pipe-smoker’s challenge to other smokers Is there a smoker in the audience who can answer this one? Nearly every smoker is particular about the kind of tobacco that goes into his pipe. While he may smoke a pipeful from a friend’s pouch for the sake of companionship, for day-in and day-out smoking he prefers his own brand. — And yet if you ask the average smoker what it is he likes about his tobacco, he may have difficulty in answering you immediately. Mr. Joe Rivers, whose letter follows, is a confirmed Edgeworth smoker. In attempting to describe what he likes about Edgeworth, he coins the word “tasty-smellfulness.” But as this does not entirely satisfy him, he puts the question up to other Edgeworth smokers. Larus & Brother Company, Richmond, Va. Gentlemen : Being a pipe smoker of no mean experi- ence (having tried most pipes and pipe to- baccos) I've watched your smokers’ letters in the magazines for some explanation of a taste that for me applies only to Edgeworth. It is extremely difficult to describe this, because it seems to come as the smoke filters through the mouth and nostrils at the end of a draw from the pipe—a sort of combined “tasty-smelifulness” that most satisfies the smoke appetite. Why don't you get some of your smokers who can write, to describe this? Sincerely yours, (Signed)’ Joe Rivers. Probably there are any number of reasons why men smoke Edgeworth. | One friend actually admitted he smoked it because his wife liked the shape of the Edge- worth glass jars to fit on her pantry shelf. However, the one outstanding feature of Edgeworth, as seen by most smok- ers, is its uniform- ity. Year after year, smokers can be sure of get- ting the same J high - grade quality of tobacco. 'f you have not tried Edgeworth, send your name and address to Larus & Brother Company, 63 South 21st Street, Richmond, Va. They will be glad to mail to you some free samples, generous helpings of both Edgeworth Plug Slice and Ready- Rubbed. The Confessions of a Dancing Man I HAVE never in my life entered a dancing marathon and, what is more, I intend never to do so. I consider more than fifteen consecutive minutes of dancing with the same partner a super- fluity. I cannot tolerate women who have not sense enough to invent some excuse and withdraw, after having tripped around the ballroom with me for eighty or ninety laps. I have no sympathy for men whose collars wilt, becomes disheveled, and whose faces turn scar- let during the throes of a dance. They should go in for some other form of divertisement. Women who could “die waltzing” are not for me. I have never talked with the slight- est degree of intelligence while pranc- ing to the strains of a syncopated shuffle, and am immediately suspicious of any one who does. The woman who attempts to one-step a fox-trot I.class with that one who has a special waltz all her own, and hing it to me. Once, while dancing in a very crowded room, I turned to gaze at my partner, only to discover that I held a total stranger in my arms. The fellow who invariably knows all the latest steps is seldom he who dances with the prettiest girl. I have engaged in the lancers, the two-step, the polka, the tango, the max- ixe, the mazurka, the fandango, the minuet, the turkey-trot, the grizzly bear, the bunny hug, the lame duck, the lulu-fado and the toddle. I still prefer a téte-d-téte in a corner of the con- servatory to them all. In all my peregrinations of the ball- room I have yet to discover a really sagacious remark made on the dance floor. Cc.
