What you’re looking at

**Top Cartoon**: Two men at a mountain resort complain about discomfort—a fish feels out of water, a lobster jokes he's "boiled." This is simple wordplay humor with no political content. **Middle Section**: A brief jab at Commissioner Hirshfield of New York, sarcastically suggesting he overlooked a grave "Anglican danger"—that history textbooks are "actually written in English." This mocks either Hirshfield's oversight or uses absurdist humor to critique educational standards. **"Turkey Retaliates" Article**: Reports the U.S. liner *Kansas* had salt pork confiscated by Turkish authorities in port, as Islamic law prohibits pork. The piece presents this as an affront to American sailors and their "rights," with implicit expectation that President Harding will intervene. It satirizes American exceptionalism—the notion that U.S. citizens' dietary preferences supersede host nations' laws. **Bottom Cartoon**: A wrecked motorist asks a passerby about his bad luck; the passerby responds that a trolley will arrive soon—dark humor suggesting the motorist faces imminent death.

Since the Turkish religion and laws prohibit the eating, sale, importation or trans- portation of hog meat, it has been held to be unlawful to bring the forbidden food within the three-mile limit of Turkish territory. A protest by Captain Volstead of the Kansas, on the grounds that the seized meat was not in- tended to be landed, but was merely a part of the ship’s stores, was ignored. He was warned that another offense would be followed by the seizure of his vessel. The crew of the Kansas, who have been deprived of what they regard as an essential part of their daily rations, threaten to desert, and have protested to the State Depart- ment in Washington. It is expected President Harding will take prompt action to stop this unwarranted interference with the rights of free American citizens. Wrecked Motorist: KIND OF HARD LUCK, ISN’T IT?
