What you’re looking at
This page contains two distinct sections: a brief political commentary and extensive advertising. **The Political Commentary** ("Renaming the Independent" and "Order of Merit") reflects early 20th-century literary/political concerns. The first section jokes about magazine consolidations—*The Independent* and *Weekly Review* merged, apparently absorbing *Harper's Weekly*, leaving ambiguity about which publication "swallowed" which. The satire suggests the surviving entity should clarify its identity. The second section mocks German poet Gerhart Hauptmann's refusal of the German presidency, arguing that creative genius and practical governance are incompatible skills. The piece suggests writing drama requires higher-order ability than statecraft—a backhanded insult to both politicians and Hauptmann's self-importance. **The Remainder** is a full-page advertisement for Hinds Honey and Almond Cream, a vintage skincare product, featuring product images and detailed marketing copy emphasizing smoothness and beauty benefits—typical period advertising with no political content.

th he ad he e, Renaming the Independent HE Independent and the Weekly Review are now one. We congratulate these friends on their union, which is doubtless happy. 3ut what has become of Harper's Weekly, which for some years had fig- ured on the cover of the Jndependent as one of that journal’s constituent in- testines? at name no longer appears! The title of the surviving periodical is THE INDEPENDENT and THE WEEKLY REVIEW which would seem to imply that the top | journal had swallowed the other. But the fact seems to be the reverse of that, since at the top of the list of editors be- holt Bro. Fabian Franklin, lately of wu! asmuch as the Independent has de- ved a remarkable usefulness as a earse in which defunct periodicals may be respectably conveyed to the ceme- tery, and whereas it has come to be dif- cult sometimes (as in this case) to determine which is the corpse and which is the hearse,—will not our com- posite contemporary please now take a new start and bunch its two titles and permit us to know it by its married | name as the Independent Review? But what has now become of Har- per’s Weekly? Shall there be no more stir of simulated animation in those honored remains? Order of Merit Tue réfusal of the poet Hauptmann to consider the possibility of becoming the President of the German Republic should not be taken as a precedent. Mr. Hauptmann explains that he is very busy writing a drama that deals with the great events of the last three years. Political parties, and even gov- erments, may rise and fall, but there is always a chance that a drama by one of the world’s most distinguished poets may become a permanent affair. Mr. Hauptmann’s spirit, however, is admir- a He says: “If Iam asked for it and feel capable of giving advice which might aid the German people, I shall, of course, not hesitate to do so.” Up to recent times it has been thought that men of creative genius were not 1 for practical government; or, her, that they could scarcely do both gs at once. Paderewski’s playing suffered from his being president of Poland and D’Annunzio has not written any notable: poems since he had his ad- venture with Fiume. It requires ability of a high second- rate order to be a statesman. It requires ability of a high first-rate order to be a poet.
