What you’re looking at

This satirical comic page titled "Sweet Land of Liberty: Around the Clock with Citizen No. 426283" mocks various Progressive Era reform movements of the early 20th century through twelve panels showing ridiculous restrictions placed on an ordinary citizen. Each panel depicts a different civic "league" or organization imposing absurd prohibitions: no government garb, coffee, smoking, typist, profanity, chewing gum, baseball, golf, clubs, kissing, or suicide. The final panel shows a man confined to bed with an "Official Permit" required even for sleep. The cartoon satirizes the proliferation of moralistic reform organizations and their invasive regulatory impulses.
