What you’re looking at

This page is primarily **advertising**, with one editorial piece about judicial injustice. The main article, "When Justice Denies Justice," describes a real 1913 case: a young girl (Harriet Nugent) lost her leg in a streetcar accident; lawyer Benjamin Oppenheim won her a $5,000 verdict, but the railroad company spent $38,000 to overturn it and destroy Oppenheim's career. Years later, his innocence was proven, but federal judges refused to enforce payment, prioritizing creditors over the injured child—now destitute and suicidal. The piece satirizes the legal system's failure: state and federal courts create a bureaucratic maze where justice becomes impossible despite technical legal remedies. The page also advertises Rameses cigarettes (marketed as an "aristocrat" for discriminating men), Bell-Ans indigestion remedy, and "Symphony Cocktails"—pre-mixed bottled drinks. These ads reflect early 20th-century consumer culture and product marketing to urban professionals.

There must be some- thing very different about Rameses which makes men of discrim- ination and experience select it with critical care, smoke it with. constant satisfaction, and recommend it as an act of real friendship. All over the world “Nobody ever changes from Rameses.” =RE™ PIREREN CO MMISTP Ne SULE When Justice Denies Justice As a young lawyer, Benjamin Oppen- heim got a verdict of $5,000 for Harriet Nugent, three years old, who had lost a leg under a Metropolitan street car. To warn other lawyers, company agents spent $38,000 to upset the verdict as ob tained by perjury, and to ruin Oppen- heim. He was disbarred. His thirteen best years were passed in poverty under a cloud. The railroad, robbed of many millions by its administrators, went into a shameful bankruptcy. By means more strange than fiction tells, Oppenheim's innocence was finally shown. He is again a lawyer. Miss Nugent, grown to womanhood, unable to work, attempted suicide. Later she was found by the police, starving in the street. On the new evidence the Appellate Divi- sion decided in 1913 that she was en- titled to $5,000 with interest for seven- teen years, but Federal Judge Lacombe refused to order the surviving receiver to pay, on the ground of unfairness to busi- ness creditors. For reasons not dissimilar, Judge Hough now declines to order the receiver to set aside $300,000, of moneys he is to dis- tribute, to cover any verdict Mr. Oppen- heim may gain against the company. He may sue and win; he cannot recover. Be- tween the Federal courts, which declared the Metropolitan bankrupt and still gov- ern the use of its funds, and the State courts, in which damage suits are brought, justice denies justice. The law, or the interpretation of law, that permits such outrages is in need of change. But what about the wronged in- dividuals? Even under present laws, have they no redress?
