What you’re looking at
This page contains a humorous poem titled "A Rebuilt Classic" by Corinne Rockwell Swain, a modernized parody of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." **The Satire:** The poem updates the classic holiday story to post-WWI 1920s America, replacing traditional gift-giving with contemporary dance crazes. Santa arrives by airplane (modern technology) instead of sleigh, and his gifts are not toys but dance records: the Boston, Argentine Fad, Tango, One-Step, and "Kitchensink Rag." The joke references the era's obsession with new dances and jazz culture, suggesting American consumer culture had shifted from traditional values to fashionable fads. **Context:** This reflects 1920s concerns about modern youth losing interest in timeless pursuits, replaced by transient popular entertainment and commercialism. The airplane detail references post-war aviation. **Secondary Content:** The remainder is a Lord & Taylor advertisement for "Onyx" silk hosiery with a "Pointex" heel, positioning stockings as practical holiday gifts for both men and women.

DAN Me MO ites be Kye, LIFE Sta h~ A Rebuilt Classic WAS the night before Christmas, and all through the flat Every creature was dancing, excepting the cat. The phonograph’s cheerful, industrious bray Untiringly sounded as time wore away. The stockings and shoes had been chosen with care Befitting the smartness of such an affair, The children, who should have been snugly in bed, Were having their Castle-Walk prac- tice instead, And Mamma in her slippers and I in my pumps Were doing the Maxixe in synchro- nous jumps, When up in the air there arose such a humming, I ran to the window to see what was coming ; And what should I view, as I opened the pane, But sood old St. Nick, in a swagger biplane! It bumped on the roof after circling around, And soon down the airshaft he came with a bound. I peeved, as he opened his pack in the all— A difficult task, for the passage was small— And heard him remark, “It seems awfully queer To carry no budget from Europe this year! But though war has bereft me of trinkets and toys, I'm amply provided with holiday joys.” His gifts looked alike, as to wrappings and style, And ne sused as he quickly selected a pile: “A Lame Duck for Grandpa; the Bos- ton for Dad; For Mother, the disc with the Argen- tine Fad. For Gladys, the Dip she interprets with skill, And here’s a new Half-and-Half ree- ord for Bill. Sue likes Hesitation—a finished side- stepper ; Tom clings to the Tango, with plenty of pepper. The Kitchensink Rag I'll apportion to Bridget ; The One-Step’s for Minnie—the spry little midget! As stockings from chimneys are pend- ent no more, Tl lay ‘e:n all carefully here by the door!” Then, placing his goggles astride of his nose, And adjusting his cap, up the airshaft he rose, With a satisfied grin, as he passed out of sight, Saying, “On with the dance! Merry Christmas—good night!” Corinne Rockwell Swain. bristmas Giving | is sometimes like trying to fit a round peg into a square hole To avoid selecting THE WRONG gift ‘for THE RIGHT person, send a box of ‘Ony§ aL Kiery and be sure to please A practical and beautiful Holiday gift which will not bankrupt you Improved qualities in “POINTEX” HEEL “ONYX” SILK HOSIERY for Men and Women are described FOR WOMEN da eae? $1.35 to $2.75 “Pointex” Clocked Silk in Black and f ; The_ “ Pointex", Heel—ex- White only, Clocked White The “Pointex"" Heel gives clusively an ‘ Onyx” 4 i a slim, graceful con- innovation on Black, Black on White or tour ‘to the ankle self with “POINTEX” HEEL, No, 235 No. 350 No. 106 $1.00 $1.50 $2.00 Fine Silk with DUB:L Lisle Pure Silk, DUB-L wide Medium weight, finest thread garter top, triple extra garter top, triple extra silk, DUB-L Silk garter top, spliced heel and toe, me- spliced heel and toe.
