What you’re looking at

This page contains several humorous anecdotes and cartoons typical of early 20th-century satirical magazines. **"Puzzled the Lawyer"** jokes about a witness who communicates only by shaking his head, frustrating the attorney. The humor relies on the literal interpretation: the attorney hears the head rattle but cannot determine whether it moved up-and-down (yes) or side-to-side (no)—a play on courtroom procedure. **"Try This, Girls"** presents brief romantic/domestic humor aimed at female readers, including a woman's silence being misinterpreted as pensiveness, and a cynical woman rejecting a marriage proposal with life insurance, joking he might survive. **"The Triumph of Matter Over Mind"** (right illustration) shows a schoolmaster at a blackboard with a female student, likely suggesting intellectual or romantic subtext, though the specific reference is unclear. The page also includes **"The International Trophy"** advertisement for champagne at bottom-left. Overall, the content reflects period attitudes toward gender, courtroom procedure, and class relations—typical of Life's satirical humor circa early 1900s.
