Life — January 1, 1914 — page 38: what you’re looking at
What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertising and editorial promotion** rather than political satire. The two cartoon panels at top show a man's hands on January 1st saying "NEVER" to a pipe, then on January 2nd already smoking again—a joke about failed New Year's resolutions. The "Happiness League" item mocks William Vernon Backus of Cleveland, who formed a group promoting "talosophy" (happiness-production). Life's editors sarcastically dismiss the scheme as impractical, suggesting people don't actually want to be happy. This appears to be satire on self-improvement movements and utopian schemes. The rest comprises *The Independent* magazine's promotional material, featuring contributions from ex-President William Howard Taft on international affairs and business predictions for 1914. Vintage advertisements for Modern Dance Magazine and Williams & Humberts Sherry complete the page.

The Pharisaical spirit loves precedent and authority; the humorous spirit loves all that is swift and shifting and subversive and fresh. One of the reasons why the orthodox heaven is so depressing a place is that there scems to be no room in it for laughter; it is all harmony and meckness, sanctified by nothing but the gravest of smiles.
