What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertising and editorial commentary** rather than political satire. Key elements: **Left column essays**: Two brief opinion pieces—one quoting Bill Nye humorously about human nature (the hypocrisy of the formerly oppressed becoming oppressors once wealthy), and another defending President Wilson's administration's currency policies, arguing there's "no great harm" in letting them try despite lacking expertise. **Main advertisements**: Walk-Over shoes (prominent center ad emphasizing style individuality), Hunter Baltimore Rye whiskey, and smaller ads for movie plots and acting schools. **Right-side cartoon**: A simple domestic comic strip showing an older man with a younger person, joking about the latter's brother being "shiftless" because he "isn't working now"—a mild humor piece about unemployment or laziness. **Context for modern readers**: This reflects early 1910s concerns about currency policy under Wilson, plus consumer culture promoting individual "style" through mass-produced shoes. The tone is gently satirical about American contradictions.

Human Nature UMAN nature is the same even to this day. The writer grew up with an Irishman who believed that when a man got wealthy enough to keep a car- riage and coachman he ought to be assas- sinated and all his goods given to the poor. He now hires a coachman him- self, having succeeded in New York City as a policeman; but the man who comes to assassinate him will find it al most impossible to obtain an audience with him. If you wish to educate a man to be a successful oppressor, with a genius for introducing new horrors and novelties in pain, oppress him early in life and don't give him any reason for doing so. The idea that “God is love” was not popular in those days. The early sct- tlers were so stern even with their own children that if the Indian had not given the forefather something to attract his attention the boy crop would have been very light. Even now the philosopher is led to ask, regarding the boasted freedom of America, why some measures are not taken to put large fly-screens over it —From “Bill Nye’s History of the United States,” published ty Messrs. C. C. Thompson Co., Chicago, Ill., through whose courtesy we are enabled to reprint this selection. In Defense of the Administration T is quite unfair for the critics to say that the administration should let the currency alone. At a time when everybody else has currency views, why should the administration be denied the same privilege? Nor does it mat- ter that no college professor has ever given evidence that he understood the currency question, Mr. Wilson may Prove an exception in this as in other respects. Let us be calm. The chance that the administration is going to make any important contribution to the science of currency is very remote, but there is no great harm in letting it try. _/ Issoctate Style Supremacy — IGHT now a world-wide exposition of Walk-Over styles is in progress.
