What you’re looking at

This page primarily contains **advertisements and satirical editorial content** rather than political cartoons. The main satirical piece, "A Fascinating Science," mocks the **eugenics movement**—specifically a new school of eugenics started in Boston. The author sarcastically praises eugenics while pointing out its fundamental absurdity: you cannot prove results because outcomes are so distant in the future. He ironically suggests people should "place our orders now for what posterity will most need," highlighting how eugenics programs make grand claims about improving humanity without accountability. The advertisements surrounding this piece—for reducing garments, foot powder, and a shower apparatus—represent typical early-20th-century consumer products. The juxtaposition is likely intentional satire: while eugenicists promised to scientifically perfect humanity, ordinary Americans were sold various dubious devices to improve their bodies. The page reflects a period when eugenics was still discussed as legitimate science in mainstream American publications, before its association with Nazi ideology discredited it.

A Fascinating Science CCORDING to a recent announce- ment in the Survey, a school of eagenics has been started in Boston. If, therefore, you are eugenically in- clined, here is the opportunity of a life- time. For some years there have been ama- teur and more of less tentative attempts to improve the race; notably, for ex- ample, in the care given to babies. Pare- goric has become a dead letter, and, along with rocking the cradle, has been rele- gated to the past. It has been super- seded by pasteurized molecules and what we may term the psychology of attention in the cradle, Now, however, by taking a course of seventy-five lectures, we not only learn what to do with babies, but the whole human race becomes pliable to our programme. The fascinating part of the whole af- fair is the impossibility of proving any- thing. Lectures are, therefore, perfect- ly safe, the results being so remote as not to be disturbing factors. Let us, therefore, go ahead and prac- tise eugenics for the sake of posterity, which alone can reap the benefit, Let us place our orders now for what posterity will most need, and in this respect, in- deed, we have an immense advantage, LIFE in MAY one is bothered a unsightly, un- comfortable, unhealthy SUPERFLUOUS FAT You can reduce your flesh where | desired if you wear r. Y. because we know pretty well what the need is. For example, there are millionaires enough. Raising millionaires is no long- er the pleasure that it once was. A few poets are desired. As long as we are doing the thing scientifically, however, why not give these poets the instincts of bankers? A real live poetical genius with a busi- ness capacity would be a new type. Also, let there be more good servants. A new type would be a combination waitress and chambermaid, who would also be willing to clean windows one day in the week. This species at present does not exist. The possibilities are infinite. There is no reason why the Boston School of Eugenics should not be successful, in the course of time, in readjusting the human race according to new patterns. The fact that we may not live to sze the results makes the whole affair very much more interesting. The idea that you must prove your theory is no longer so necessary as it was. In fact, it is becoming more or less ridiculous. comicbooks.com
