What you’re looking at

This page is primarily **advertising**, not political satire. The main content consists of three product advertisements: 1. **Woodbury's Facial Soap** (left side): A beauty advertisement with testimonial copy about scalp health and hair care, featuring illustrations of a woman's hair. This reflects early 20th-century cosmetics marketing emphasizing scientific claims about skin and scalp treatment. 2. **Hotel Chamberlin** (center/right): A resort advertisement for Old Point Comfort, Virginia, highlighting its location near military installations (Hampton Roads, Fortress Monroe) and luxury amenities like medicinal baths and a sea-water pool. 3. **Carstairs Rye Whiskey** (right): A liquor advertisement. The upper left contains a brief literary excerpt from Addison's *Spectator* about what provokes laughter—context about wit and human foibles—but this appears decorative rather than satirical commentary on the page itself. The page reflects period advertising strategies: scientific legitimacy claims, luxury appeal, and celebrity/authority endorsement.

Provokers of Mirth (From Addison's Spectator.) I am afraid I shall appear too ab- stracted in my speculations if I show that when a man of wit makes us laugh it is by betraying some oddness or in- firmity in his own character, or in the representation which he makes of others; and that when we laugh at a brute, or even at an inanimate thing, it is at some action or incident that bears a remote analogy to any blunder or absurdity in reasonable creatures. But to come into common life: I shall pass by the consideration of those stage Only by keeping the scalp in per fect health can you keep your hair like you wand it, Always remember this) fact about your hair: If there is any condition of your hair you want to improve, if it hasn't enough life and gloss, if there is dan- druff or too much oil, never forget that the condition of your hair depends om the condition of your scalp. I know several of these butts who are men of wit and sense. though by some odd turn of humor, some unlucky cast in their person or behavior, they have always the mis- fortune to make the company merry. The truth of it is, a man is not quali- fied for a butt, who has not a good deal of wit and vivacity, even in the ridicu- lous side of his character. A stupid but: is only fit for the conversation of ordi- nary people: men of wit require one that will give them play, and bestir himself in the absurd part of his behavior. A butt with these accomplishments fre- quently gets the laugh of his side, and turns the ridicule upon him that attacks him. Sir John Falstaff was a hero of this species, and gives a good descrip- tion of himself in his capacity of a butt, after the following manner: “ Men of all sorts,” says that merry knight, “take a pride to gird at me. The brain of man is able to invent anything that tends to ghter more than I invent, or is invent- cd on me.
