What you’re looking at

This is a satirical cartoon about social gossip and reputation management among the upper class. A man and woman, seated together at what appears to be a formal social gathering, discuss rumors of an affair between them. She dismisses him as dull and denies interest; he agrees he's not interested either. However, he then cynically suggests that since there's already "smoke" (gossip), they might as well create actual "fire" (an affair) to match the rumors. The satire targets how idle gossip can become self-fulfilling—people may act according to rumors about them simply because the rumors exist and damage their reputations anyway. It's commentary on the superficiality and moral flexibility of high society, where appearance and scandal matter more than genuine feeling. The cartoon suggests people will behave scandalously if scandal is already attributed to them.
