What you’re looking at
This page contains satirical commentary on Dr. Wiley, a chemist who exposed food adulteration but made a tactical error denying knowledge of osteopathy. The "Expert Damnation" section criticizes his hypocrisy: while he courageously fights dangerous chemicals in food, he ironically dismisses an emerging medical practice, showing "boiling prejudice" masquerading as scientific authority. The cartoon "Going Down for the Third Time" depicts a drowning figure—likely representing someone caught in scandal or failure, possibly related to the Wiley controversy or similar public embarrassment. The bottom section, "They Would All Come," presents a humorous dialogue between a real estate man and Jones about a remote, pristine property—implying that even unspoiled wilderness cannot escape human exploitation and tourism.

+ Mrs. Stonehammer: BE CAREFUL NOT TO FRACTURE HIS SKULL, DEAR, REMEMBER, WE NEED A SOUP BOWL TO COMPLETE OUR DINNER SET. Expert Damnation W = respect Dr. Wiley, not only as chemist and man of courage, but also as a bridegroom and a father. But when he declares osteopathy a “ pure fraud,” he shows a naughty spirit and commits a cruel and most unbride- groomial act. Such a statement may be depressing news to those countless men, women and children who have been cured by osteopathy after drugs and chemicals had failed. Yet it is unfair to blame Dr. Wiley, for surely treason could no further go than for a chemist, however suffering, to allow himself to be saved by a school that ignores drugs. A decent death, full of medicine and honor, should be the choice of every self-respecting chemist. They have declared war upon the upstart who - fj — —— GOING DOWN FOR THE THIRD TIME CLASSIFIED “MA, DID COD MAKE THAT?” “ yes,’ D DID GOD MAKE PA?” WE CERTAINLY 1D.” saves his-patients without knife or bottle, and they must continue the good fight. It does scem, however, that our chemist made a tactical mistake in asserting on the same occasion, “I do not know anything about osteopathy ; have not any knowledge of it.” While this confession hardly jibes with his off-hand, free damnation, it shows the kindly attitude of the old school scientist toward the new practitioner. We are here taught that a solution of ignorance, ex- pertly blended with boiling prejudice, forms a coating for the brain through which daylight cannot enter. They Would All Come EAL ESTATE MAN: And what a place for a bunga- low!—primeval forest, virgin wilderness, absolute seclusion. Jones: Yes, but that’s just the kind of a place that everybody hunts up! comicbook $.co
