What you’re looking at
This Life magazine page is primarily **advertising**, not satire or political commentary. It features three commercial ads typical of the 1910s-20s era: 1. **Pebeco Tooth Paste**: Markets to public speakers concerned about dental appearance, offering a "free trial" and "acid test papers"—reflecting early 20th-century enthusiasm for scientific approaches to hygiene. 2. **Club Cocktails**: Advertises pre-bottled cocktails, comparing their aging to fine spirits. This appears during Prohibition era (though exact date unclear), when such products existed in legal gray areas. 3. **Londonderry Mineral Water**: Promotes health benefits, claiming to "cleanse" the system of "poisons." The small section titled "The Housewife's Favorite Fiction" appears to gently mock domestic small-talk clichés—not addressing the ads themselves. The "Scientific Investigation" column discusses cerebrospinal meningitis research using animal testing, presenting it straightforwardly without obvious satire. This is a typical advertising-heavy magazine page of its era.

As we learn from a paper by Dr. F. W. Battin (Lancet, Feb- ruary 17) their method may be summa- rized as follows: They first try to get something from a human being suffer- ing from the disease that will reproduce it in monkeys, objectively at least, for monkeys cannot speak, although they arc of our kin, according to the evolution- ists, By injecting this diseased matter into healthy monkeys they succeeded in producing what looked like the original disease in several of them The next step was to obtain the serum of the blood of some beast that had been previously charged with the poison, in- ject the serum into healthy monkeys and then try to reproduce the disease in the animal in whom this serum was injected If they could not cause it they argued that they had made a discovery by which the human race could be made immune to poliomyclitis, just as they claim to have made the race “immune” to small- pox, diphtheria, typhoid, cte., ete. The idea that this process may have a dele- terious effect on the race does not seem to have been considered. It might be well for humanity if these gentlemen were to lift theit eyes from the micro- scope at times and realize that there arc other points of view than that of its ex- ceedingly limited field.
